Biography
Sophia Loren, born as Sofia Villani Scicolone, was born on September 20, 1934 in Rome, Italy. Her mother, Romilda Villani, was a struggling actress, while her father, Riccardo Scicolone, was a construction engineer who didn’t acknowledge her until later in life. Loren grew up in Pozzuoli, near Naples, in poverty and amid the devastation of World War II.
She married Carlo Ponti, an Italian film producer, and lived mostly in Italy and the U.S., raising their two sons, Carlo and Edoardo.
Loren’s filmography is vast, but five significant films include: “Two Women” (1960), a war-time drama for which she won an Oscar; “Marriage Italian Style” (1964), a comedic yet poignant love story; “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” (1963), a film anthology exploring women’s experiences; “The Gold of Naples” (1954), an anthology of Neapolitan life; and “El Cid” (1961), a historical epic where she played a Spanish noblewoman.
Her Oscar win made her the first actor to win an Academy Award for a foreign-language performance. A statue of Loren stands in Naples. An interesting fact is her 18-day prison sentence for tax evasion in 1982, after which she wrote a prison cookbook. Despite her challenging life, Loren continues to be an enduring icon of beauty and talent.
